Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Australian Kelpie / Labrador Retriever Mix is a cross between a pure Australian Kelpie and a pure Lab, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This isn't a common mix, but you may occasionally encounter it in a rescue. This mix will likely be a high-energy dog best for the active family.
Appearance / health:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog. In this case, the appearance of your pet could be different depending on whether the Australian Kelpie or the Lab traits dominate. Expect a large energetic breed with a water repellent coat.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed, the hybrid of these two agile, athletic breeds offer the most appeal to the active and involved owner. Labs love attention, and Kelpies are good working animals who enjoy having a sense of purpose.
