Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Shepherd Pit
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Shepherd Pit is a cross between a pure American Pit Bull Terrier and a pure German Shepherd Dog, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. Know how to train and socialize a powerful dog with lots of energy and a need for purpose. The reality is that some of these APBT mixes may be created by breeders with questionable intentions. Be aware of your own abilities to establish yourself as a loving alpha. This mix will not be right for everyone.
Appearance / health:
All mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, but in general with the Shepherd Pit you can expect a large, muscular dog. Some of them have a more obvious "bully" appearance in the face and body, so be aware of the local laws regarding your right to own a pit bull mix.
Behavior / temperament:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog, but there's little doubt that the combination of GSD and APBT will bring a dog with a lot of energy and loyalty to give to the owner who provides kind, consistent socialization and a sense of purpose.
