Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Bullboxer
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
A first generation Bullboxer is a cross between two purebreeds, an American Pit Bull Terrier and a Boxer-- two powerful medium to large breeds that benefit from responsible ownership and careful training to create the loving, loyal dog that enthusiastic owners report. Check with your insurer and your local code to make sure you are allowed to own this mix in your area.
Appearance / health:
Since it isn't a pure breed, the looks of an American Pit Bull Terrier / Boxer mix can vary by quite a lot, with the biggest dogs being twice the weight of the smallest. Expect a dog that gives an impression of power, whatever its ultimate size.
Behavior / temperament:
An overly protective Bullboxer might over-react to something that really isn't a threat to its people, such as strange dog. This breed probably isn't a good choice for the novice owner.
