Is this dog right for you?

Species group:

The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The American Bulldog / American Mastiff Mix was created for the purpose of getting a powerful and loyal guardian dog. However, the reality is that not all of these hybrids are being created by well-intentioned people. Know your breeder, and know how to properly socialize and train a dog with powerful protective instincts.

Appearance / health:
This muscular cross-breed will undoubtedly deter intruders, but it could also attract attention from your insurer or local law enforcement. Be sure you are allowed to own this dog in your area before you acquire it.

Behavior / temperament:
All large guardian mixes demand respectful but consistent training from a responsible owner who knows how to be an alpha and how to socialize the dog properly.
