Is the Alano Español right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Spanish Alano; Spanish Bulldog

The basics:
The Alano Español is a Molosser-type of dog which was developed in Spain as early as the 14th century. Traditionally, the Alanos were used in herding, boar hunting and during bullfights. Their numbers decreased when bullfighting using these dogs was banned in 1883.

In the 1970s some Spanish dog-lovers found a few Alano Español in the Basque areas of Spain, where they were being used to herd semi-wild cattle and hunt wild boar. Today, the Alano Español is used for herding, hunting, police work, agility and weight pulling contests. They are recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina de España.

This fast, powerful, and fearless dog has no place in the hands of timid, inexperienced, or irresponsible dog owners. Know how to properly train and socialize a strong animal with a desire to do something useful.

Appearance / health:
These athletic dogs have broad chests, and are well muscled. The heavy head is typically Mastiff with a strong jaw. The muzzle is wide. They have a large nose that is black in color.

Alanos are average shedders. They need to be brushed occasionally.

They need lots of exercise in large, open spaces, under the close supervision of their owners.

There are no known specific ailments found in these dogs, as they are quite a healthy breed. Some dogs may suffer from hip dysplasia, which is a condition caused by badly formed hips that may cause lameness.

Behavior / temperament:
Alanos are primitive dogs that can be aggressive at times. At the same time, they are extremely servile toward their masters and can do anything to please them. Devoid of pain and fear, they have a reputation of fighting to death. Fighting Alanos were known to jump at a bull. Being fiercely territorial and protective, they make good watchdogs. Alanos are one of the few dogs that do not drool, slobber, or snore.

Alanos are difficult to housebreak. Firm, consistent training needs to be started at an early age to help them fit in with modern lifestyles. It ensures that the owner stays in control of the dog. Socialization is necessary for this breed. Their learning rate is average.

They do not bark much.
