Species group: Mixed Breeds
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The pairing between an Akita and a Great Dane isn't all that common, but you may occasionally encounter this mix in a rescue. Considering the size and unpredictable temperament of this mix, you should be a confident, experienced alpha who knows how to properly socialize and manage large breeds.
Appearance / health:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog, but you had better plan on having a giant. And it won't necessarily be one of those so-called gentle giants.
Behavior / temperament:
While the intention of this mix may be to create a giant dog that looks intimidating but is a sweet marshmallow on the inside, the truth is that genetics doesn't always work out the way we might like. Can you still manage the dog if you get a giant with the Akita's independent personality? The Akita / Great Dane Mix is not the choice for fragile, inexperienced, or unconfident owners.
