Is this dog right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Akita Shepherd, Shepkita

The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The first generation Akita Shepherd is a cross between a pure Akita and a pure German Shepherd Dog, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. Although the outcome of a mixed pairing is never guaranteed, the purpose of this pairing is often to create a family guardian that's a bit easier to manage than a pure Akita. Owners will still need to have a firm grasp on dog psychology and the ability to manage a large, intelligent dog that could become destructive if not given enough exercise or something worthwhile to do.

Appearance / health:
Since it isn't a purebreed, there can be some variation in the appearance of the Akita Shepherd, but in all cases, you can expect a large, energetic dog.

Behavior / temperament:
The cross between two of the world's most respected working breeds, the German Shepherd Dog and the Akita, can be a superb companion or service animal for the owner who knows how to channel the dog's high intelligence and energy. However, this mix is unlikely to be the best choice for somebody who just wants to kick back on the couch. Be aware of the potential for aggression from the Akita side, and know how to command respect with a kind but consistent hand.
