Is the Thai Bangkaew Dog right for you?

Species group:

The basics:
The Thai Bangkaew dog comes from a village of that name in central Thailand, where houseboat residents along the Yom River took unusual longhaired puppies as their pets. Heavy rains and flooding created a barrier that isolated these dog owners, leading to inbreeding and the creation of the breed. They tend to be a loyal, protective pet that will announce strangers, but they need to be properly socialized. Like other Spitz dogs, they can be stubborn and a bit of a handful.

The AKU (Asian Kennel Union) approved Thai Bangkaew Dog in January 2006, and the FCI published a breed standard in 2013.

Appearance / health:
The Bangkaew is a medium-sized Spitz type dog with a square profile. The head is in proportion to the body and has small, almond-shaped eyes that are black or dark brown in color. Ears are erect and triangular. The coat is thicker and longer around the neck, chest, and back forming a lion-like ruff, which is more noticeable on dogs than on bitches. The tail is richly plumed and is carried little curved over the back.

Bangkaews are low shedders. Regular brushing or combing is sufficient to stimulate coat growth and remove dead hairs. Standard care is needed for eyes, ears, pads, and nails.

Bangkaews do not need much exercise. They are usually able to fulfill their exercising needs themselves. A walk once or twice a day keeps them fit and happy.

Behavior / temperament:
They may be slow to respond to commands and would not accept harsh punishment meekly, although they do not threaten to bite or attack.

They love to dig.

Bangkaews are intelligent and a little effort goes a long way in teaching them. However, they are self-willed and may turn obstinate or manipulative during learning. They have a strong sense of dignity and do not submit to harsh punishment. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train Bangkaews.

They are watchdogs and bark at every new sight or sound they come across. Early socialization with different sights and sounds help to reduce the tendency to bark.
