Is the Sloughi right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Arabian Greyhound

The basics:
The mysterious and sensitive Sloughi probably originated in North Africa, a region where dogs are often considered impure. It's noteworthy that the native Berbers highly respect Sloughis and distinguish these aristocratic-looking sighthounds from more ordinary dogs. This sensitive breed is loyal to its owner and aloof with strangers. In 2016, they were recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), which may raise their profile in the US.

However, because of their sensitivity, they won't be the choice for everyone. Be an intuitive dog psychologist with some experience offering reward-based training. Be aware that some of these dogs dislike being touched.

Appearance / health:
The refined head is long and strong. The triangular ears are rounded at the tip and hang flat on each side. The nose is black with well-opened nostrils. The wedge-shaped muzzle is as long as the skull. The dark eyes are well-set in the sockets. The length of the long neck is almost equal to the length of the head. The skin is tight and smooth. The chest is not wide.

The Sloughi does not require elaborate grooming. A simple brushing occasionally is sufficient to keep their coats in good condition. Bathing is done when necessary.

A daily jog with occasional sprints is necessary to keep the Sloughi fit. Regular exercise keeps the dog physically and mentally healthy.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy, an inherited eye disorder that causes blindness, is seen in few Sloughis. Because of their high tolerance to pain, Sloughis may not show signs of injury or pain.

Behavior / temperament:
Sloughis love to chase and have an excellent vision. They make excellent watchdogs, and will not hesitate to protect their masters and property if need be. Some are known to be one-owner dogs and transferring ownership may not be easy. They enjoy jumping and sprinting.

Sloughis adhere to the pack mentality, and hence owners need to assert their “alpha” position. Sloughi bitches are over-protective of their young, and nurture them well. They have a high tolerance to pain. Although they are primarily sighthounds, they are capable of hunting by scent.

They have a good learning rate though they can be obstinate and difficult to train. Early socialization and obedience training are necessary.

Sloughis are usually calm and do not bark much.
