Is the Rottweiler / American Staffordshire Terrier Mix right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Staffweiler

The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

The first generation Staffweiler is a cross between a pure Rottweiler and a pure American Staffordshire Terrier, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. They don't seem to be as common as Pitweilers, the cross between a pure American Pit Bull Terrier and a pure Rottweiler, but just as the AmStaff and the APBT are frequently confused by the public, the Pitweiler and the Staffweiler offer similar challenges to owners.

You must know how to train and socialize a large, powerful dog with lots of energy and a need for purpose. The reality is that some of these muscular mixes may be created by breeders with questionable intentions. Be aware of your own abilities to establish yourself as a loving alpha. This mix will not be right for everyone.

Appearance / health:
All mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, but in general with the Pitweiler you can expect a large, muscular dog. Some of them have an obvious "bully" appearance in the face and body. Be certain you are allowed to own so-called "pit bull mixes" in your area.

Behavior / temperament:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog, but the intent behind the Staffweiler is to create a loyal, protective guardian that will deter all but the most determined intruder. The trouble is that you're getting the traits of two dominant, strong-willed, and powerful breeds. If you are a tentative or inexperienced owner, you could be completely run over. Know how to properly socialize a muscular protective breed so that you end up with a loyal companion rather than an insurance liability.
