Is the Prazsky Krysarik right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Pražský Krysarík; Prague Ratter

The basics:
Pražský Krysarík is Czech for "Prague Ratter," referring to this ancient breed's original function as a vermin-killer in the city of Prague. This tiny dog, claimed by some to be the smallest breed in the world, was beloved by the old Bohemian monarchy during the Middle Ages, but its popularity has been eclipsed by the rise of the Miniature Pinscher in the 19th century. Today, it's virtually unknown outside the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Its lively personality is a mix of the spunky rat-catcher and the happy, family-centered lapdog. A true portable pet, perhaps one day it will attract the number of fans it deserves.

Appearance / health:
The Prazsky Krysarik is a very small breed, smaller than even the Miniature Pinscher. The head is pear-shaped with a round skull and a narrow fox-like muzzle. The eyes are dark, round in shape and noticeably bulging. The ears are erect, set at the back of the head and are slightly rounded at the tip. Tail is high set and forms a half circle when the dog is at attention.

They are average shedders. The coat is easy to maintain and could be brushed occasionally or simply wiped with a damp cloth. Ears need regular checking and may be cleaned when required. Standard care is needed for eyes, pads, and nails.

Prazsky have minimal exercise requirements that could be fulfilled by simply moving around the house. A walk once or twice a day is sufficient to keep them fit and happy.

Legs of Prazsky Krysaviks are very thin boned and are prone to injury.

Behavior / temperament:
Prazsky Krysariks are alert, active, and lively. Their agility, miniature size, and keen sense of smell make them ideal as a ratter.

Prazsky dogs are active and intelligent. They are easy to train and are quick to learn commands. They are sensitive little creatures and do not take easily to harsh treatment. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train them. They expect to be adored.

They are average barkers and are not known to bark without reason.
