Is the Portuguese Podengo Medio right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Podengo Português; Portuguese Warren Hound

The basics:
The Portuguese Podengo, a national dog of Portugal, is an ancient breed developed as a vermin controller, household dog, and rabbit hunter. Indeed, the American Kennel Club (AKC), which recognized the breed in 2004, states that most Portguese Podengos in Portugal are members of active hunting packs. Of course, the same traits that make them fine cooperative hunters also create an affectionate, eager-to-please companion animal.

This breed comes in three sizes: the Grande (large), the Medio (medium), and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno (small), which is classified by AKC as a separate breed. Both smooth and wire coat varieties are available in each size. In the US, the Portuguese Podengo is represented by the American Portuguese Podengo Medio/Grande Club. The three sizes should not be interbred.

Appearance / health:
All three varieties of the Podengo are similar except their size. They have well-proportioned heads. Eyes are small, oblique, and brown to honey in color. Ears are large, pricked, and highly mobile. Tail is usually carried low.

Both smooth and wirehaired varieties of Podengos are average shedders and are easy to groom. Smooth Podengos require occasional combing and brushing with a hard bristled brush to stimulate coat growth and remove dead hair. The coarse rough coats of wirehaired

Podengos pick up leaves, dirt, twigs, and debris that need to be removed and therefore need more care. Standard care is needed for eyes, ears, pads, and nails.

Taking them for a walk regularly on different routes presents them with new sights and smells and satiates their instinct for adventure. Agility and tracking will keep them involved.

There is a low incidence of inherited diseases or defects in Portuguese Podengos.

Behavior / temperament:
They have a keen sense of sight and smell and are quick to escape fences looking for adventure.

Podengos are intelligent and are easy to train. They are sensitive dogs, and hence harsh disciplinary measures can be avoided while training. Positive reinforcement yields excellent results. Training and socialization need to begin at an early age.

Podengos are quiet dogs. It is important to pay attention when they bark for they do not bark without a reason.
