Is the Miniature American Shepherd right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Miniature Australian Shepherd; Mini Aussie; Miniature Aussie

The basics:
A new breed officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2016, the Miniature American Shepherd was created to be a mini version of the Australian Shepherd. The original breeder, Doris Cordova of California, developed these dogs from very small individuals from that breed. Like their bigger ancestor, the Miniature American Shepherd has the best elements of the herding dog personality. It's smart, loving, and good-natured. And the smaller size makes them a little more practical for many families.

The Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA (MASCUSA) points out these dogs are still capable of working as herding animals, and they have become a popular pet dog on the equestrian circuit, since they travel well and enjoy being around horses.

Since they have been officially split from the Australian Shepherd breed by the AKC, it's probably best to avoid referring to them as Miniature Australian Shepherds in the future.

Appearance / health:
The Miniature American Shepherd is a well-balanced herding dog of small to medium size. It has a bone structure that is moderate and well proportioned to body size. The length of the dog is more than its height. It has a coat of moderate length.

The Miniature American Shepherd is an average shedder and requires an occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathing is done only when it is necessary.

They are energetic dogs and need plenty of vigorous exercise to stay in shape.

Behavior / temperament:
Miniature American Shepherds are a playful breed with a lot of energy. They need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. With proper training, these dogs excel at sports, obedience tests, and agility. Being primarily herding dogs, they make good guard dogs and excellent companion dogs. The tendency to nip at people's heels is also seen. Separation anxiety is seen in these dogs when left alone for too long.

They are intelligent and easy to train. They learn fast with training that requires them to use their intelligence.

They are not noisy and bark only to warn in case they sense something suspicious, but otherwise they are quiet workers.
