Is the Hanover Hound right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Hannover'scher Schweisshund; Hannoverscher Schweisshund; Hanoverian Hound; Hanoverian Scenthound

The basics:
Developed from the large bloodhounds of the Middle Ages, the Hanover Hound was always valued for its strong sense of smell. Its ability to track wounded game made it a favorite on the hunting estates of the short-lived German kingdom of Hanover. This is a working dog, not a pet. Today, the breed is slowly gaining recognition outside Germany as a fine scenthound with a keen nose. However, it can't be expected to be the kind of dog who goes to anyone. The Hanover Hound wants to please its owner, not win a stranger's attention.

Appearance / health:
The Hanoverian Hound is a medium-sized dog with a broad head and moderately long muzzle, which tapers to a point. It has a long and muscular neck. The breed has dark, large, and slightly slanting eyes with a characteristic wrinkled forehead. The ears are large and generally hanging close to the head. The legs are muscular and straight, or slightly bent, but not too long. The tail is moderately long, tapering to the tip, and carried erect over the back when in an excited state.

The breed requires regular brushing and cleaning of its ears.

Hanoverian Hounds require vigorous exercise in the form of daily long walks.

The Hanoverian Hound is generally a very healthy breed.

Behavior / temperament:
While hunting, tracking, or trailing, the Hanoverian Hound maintains a very single-minded and persistent behavior. Dogs of this breed possess a powerful scent. They hunt both singly and in packs. The breed is not for the casual owner with little understanding of the breed. They easily get distracted by interesting scents, and hence must be always on leash when they are outdoors.

The Hanoverian Hound responds best to firm, patient, and consistent training.
