Is the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Grand Basset; Basset Griffon Vendéen

The basics:
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen (GBGV) is a French hound of ancient heritage dating back to at least the sixteenth century. The name roughly translates as to "small, low to the ground, rough-coated dog from Vendeen," and that's a pretty decent description. Trained to hunt hares by scent, the GBGV needed to be able move through the thick underbrush, rocks, and thorny bushes of the Vendeen region, resulting in its unique appearance. Like most hounds, this cheerful dog loves to please its people, and it can make a family pet that the American Kennel Club (AKC) describes as "happy."

The GBGV is related to the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, which is the smaller version of the same basic idea. In fact, they were considered to be the same breed until the 1950s. According to the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America, "The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen has many of the same characteristics as the Petit Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV), but just stands a little larger... In temperament he is slightly more laid back than the Petit, although both are very active hounds."

Appearance / health:
The body is slightly elongated. The forelegs are straight. The skull is convex and elongated. The tail is thick at the base, and set high.

Regular exercise in the form of long walks is excellent for the Grand Basset.

Behavior / temperament:
The Grand Basset is easy to train though the trainer needs to be dominant without being harsh. They are somewhat independent-minded, so know how to be a kind, consistent alpha who can use positive reinforcement.
