Is the Golden Retriever / Labrador Retriever Mix right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Golden Labrador

The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

When you combine two of the best-regarded companion dogs for active families, the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever, you get a mixed-breed retriever with many of the same great characteristics as the original purebreeds. These friendly, energetic animals are great for active owners who love to go places and do things with a dog that enjoys being a true companion. While you could also get these great traits from the purebred dogs-- and you should opt for the purebred if you plan to show your dog-- if you find this mix at a rescue or a shelter, it might be one of your top choices. However, if you just want a lazy dog to watch TV with at home, keep looking.

Appearance / health:
They are medium sized with a short hard coat. The tail is feathered in some dogs.

Brushing the coat regularly with a hard bristled brush keeps the coat clean and tidy. Ears need to be checked and cleaned regularly. Teeth may be brushed occasionally with special toothpaste meant for dogs.

Exercise keeps them physically fit and mentally agile. A walk once or twice provides them the chance to exercise and socialize around. Regular play sessions that involve fetching a ball will keep these dogs engaged.

Hip dysplasia (a hereditary disease of hip joints which eventually causes lameness or arthritis) and eye disorders can possibly affect some Golden Labs.

Behavior / temperament:
A high retrieving instinct can be expected in the dogs. The original justification for creating this cross was to develop a superior service dog. Energetic, intelligent, and delighted to work with its human-- because work seems like play to these dogs-- they may well prove to be superior service dogs if this cross becomes better known. If you're an active person who likes to jog, hike, and bike with a friendly dog, the Golden Labrador can certainly be a fine option.

They are intelligent and are eager to please. These traits combined with their calm disposition make them ideal training material. Right behavior can be ensured by providing them the basic obedience training. They can also be trained to compete in agility, obedience, fly ball, and flying disc events.

They do not bark much.
