Is the Beagle Harrier right for you?

Species group:

The basics:
The Beagle Harrier was developed in late 19th century France to hunt game like hare, deer, fox, and wild boar. As the name suggests, the breed's ancestors were Beagles and Harriers, but today it is recognized as a separate breed in Europe by the International Cynological Federation (FCI). Outside the region, some people may simply consider it as a large Beagle. Either way, it is considered a fine scenthound.

Appearance / health:
The Beagle Harrier has a moderately heavy head with a broad skull. The stop is not pronounced. It has a well-developed nose having a straight bridge and a tapering muzzle. Its short, medium-sized ears, folded slightly in the mid-section, hang flat against the skull. The eyes are wide and dark. The Beagle Harrier has a well-built body structure with an open neck, and a chest that is not too flat. Its abdomen is full and it has a reasonable tuck-up. The Beagle Harrier has a short and level back and a heavy, muscular loin that may be slightly clean-flanked. The tail is moderately long and heavy.

The Beagle Harrier requires regular brushing along with occasional bathing.

The Beagle Harrier needs a good amount of exercise.

The Beagle Harrier is generally a healthy breed. However, eye and ear infections, joint and spine disorders (slipped disk and hip dysplasia), chronic brain disease (meningitis), and heart problems are commonly reported. Epilepsy is seen in rare cases.

Behavior / temperament:
The Beagle Harrier is a hardy and vigorous dog that is fast and agile. It has a keen sense of smell. It is courageous and has a strong determination, and is not afraid to enter thickest vegetation.

Beagle Harriers may be challenging to train, as their sense of smell easily distracts them. They respond to training sessions that are brief and incorporate fun activity. Their pleasant personalities are an added advantage for successful training.

The Beagle Harrier is not excessively noisy.
