When I was a small boy we owned two common house finches. They were plain looking, but very active birds. Looking back on this I would not own a bird again unless I could let it out of the cage. Birds are meant to fly, and I believe that they do better in the wild; free.
But we did, as it were, own finches. They were good pets, fairly quiet and easy to feed. Although they are famous for throwing their spent seeds (and their poop- by the way) all over the place. This makes cleaning up after them something of a chore. They are however interesting to watch.
I would not recommend keeping this type of small bird in captivity. They are best left to the wild, where incidentally you may still feed and watch them.
