We got our cockatiel as a Christmas present, believe it or not. Although I initially loved the cute chatter and rosy cheeks, it quickly became quite a burden. Though the bird ate commonly found bird food, the food contained some seeds (sunflower seeds, etc.) our bird found it fun to crack these open and throw the shells out onto the floor. It also found a good time in throwing its food out onto the floor in general. This, combined with a knack for shooting poo out of the cage onto the floor made for some very messy living spaces.
We also found that the "cute chatter" was really never ending. This bird is extremely vocal, in my experience. She never seemed to want to shut-up, even when we covered the cage!
Finally, we tried to train the bird to be handled but she bit... a lot, hard, and often! We tried conditioning her to being handled by using gloves at first, but she never stopped biting and fighting being picked up. Overall, we were pretty disappointed in this "gift" and found it was not really for us.
