I have had cockatiels as pets throughout my life and I can say that they do vary in personality. Some may be okay with being held while others prefer to do their own thing. Girls don't sing very pretty (or at all), while the males can actually learn to mimic certain whistles and words.

The birds are pretty easy to maintain and a weekly bird cage cleaning would be advised (maybe line cages with newspaper). My husband actually built a walk in cage and we currently have 10 cockatiels of different colors (a couple yellow, a couple all white, and the rest are grey and yellow - the most common color I think).
