Cockatiels are very good pets for people just starting out in the world of pet ownership. Based on experiences I've had with different birds over the years, they tend to be social and like to be with their owners. They greet you when you get home, tend to like to be handled, and can respond to owners' calls. Often they like to sit in the shower with their owners and get really excited when that happens. They are "flock" birds and do not like to be left alone for long periods.

Cockatiels are very curious, though, and do tend to chew on things they aren't supposed to, so they should be watched carefully. They can also often be demanding and wanting attention RIGHT THIS SECOND.

Their habitat needs are modest, and they are fairly easy to clean up after.
