I owned a cockatiel for approximately five years. If you're a bird-lover, and you want a pet that's more interactive and interesting than a parakeet, but less needy than a parrot, this may be the right bird for you.

You can expect your cockatiel to live at least 12 years - plan for this when you consider getting one. Food will not be expensive, but your bird will need variety in its diet.

Personally, I find parrots to be slightly annoying in their vocalizations and behavior. Likewise, I find small birds too uninteresting to be worth it. The cockatiel is a happy medium. Their behavior is always amusing rather than annoying. They will mimic, but it's mostly whistling and melodies rather than words.

Cockatiels can be very loving and attached to their owners. Most are okay to take in the car with you (I've seen quite a few people do this). If you don't want a bird that always wants to follow you, you may consider another species.

I can't speak as to their trainability since I never delved into that, but you can find videos of them performing an impressive array of tricks.
