the poor mans parrot, cockatiels are a simple pet to keep minimal attention needed, clean cage bit of water bit of food they are as happy as larry. however , probably one of the noisiest birds to keep caged up, they will start to squawk n squeal from sun up to sundown without any problems, but at the same time i have owned many cockatiels, mostly in an aviary but i did keep one in the house who would sit on your shoulder whilst you drove to the local store, make no attempt to fly away and would speak several words, though not as clear as a parrot, they are also great at mimicking sounds they hear. if you own a cockatiel and you go out to work of a day, just simply turn on the tv or the radio to give them that bit of background noise and they will be fine, maybe even end up whistling some tv theme if it is heard often enough. in an aviary setting they are fine with budgies, finches and quails, even the odd kakariki parakeet, but avoid introducing lovebirds, they will have the toes off all your budgies etc.
