I had my first cockatiels as a high-schooler. Over the years, I've kept various colors of birds. Most were "aviary birds" i.e. not trained. The most personable of my cockatiels had been hand-fed and were wonderful pets.
One thing that many newbies do not know is that the male cockatiels have a beautiful sing-song warbling voice which is very lovely to listen to.
Cockatiels are an ideal choice for most home environments. They are also an ideal choice for an outdoor aviary (in warmer climates) and for beginning aviculturists looking to learn how to breed birds. Cockatiel genetics are also exciting for hobbyists.
