My Cockatiel "Amen"

If you haven't had the opportunity to see a cockatiel you are definitely missing something. I had purchased one for my husband who thought they were really cool looking. He said "Amen" reminded him of a rock star with the crazy little tuft of hair at the top of his head. This is referred to as a "crest".

Our little cockatiel was a grey male. He had beautiful orange circles on his cheeks and his crest was yellow. The crest is very interesting because it is almost like a mood ring. It doesn't change color but it does change position depending on the birds mood.

Amen was very easy to look after. Sometimes he could get in a mood where he would flick his birdseed out of the cage, but it helped that I placed a skirting around the bottom of the cage.

I was told Cockatiels were not able to speak but we found out quickly that our little friend could pick up words and repeat them. Their voice is not as clear as a budgie but it is still understandable...at least to a loving owner :-)

If you are wanting to try to get your bird to speak, let me remind you that it is the male of the species that are a better choice. I personally have never had a female bird that could talk but the males seem to pick it up quite quickly.

I would say that these birds are great little companions and are purchased often by people. Their popularity a close second to a budgie.
