I have been raising cockatiels almost all of my 40 years with birds.  I love them!  They are truly a perfect bird.  They are friendly, when you get one that has been hand-fed from a GOOD breeder, and they really tend to stay that way.  Even the breeders that I have are still very friendly and step up and give kisses and talk to me every day.  They are calm, so they are good for families with children.  The males have a nice whistle and talk fairly well.  The females have a couple of calls they do, and some will talk, but the females are typically very quiet birds, so they are wonderful apartment pets, too.  I really think this is the best beginner bird -- low cost, low cost of maintenance, and sweethearts.
