Patches & I

Patches was a beautiful cockatiel. We did keep his wings clipped but this was for his safety more than worry of him flying off. Cockatiels love interaction with people but I find that they will connect with one or two people more than just "loving" everyone. Extremely easy to care for after the initial cost of set up. You want to get a decent size cage and have lots of things for your bird to play with. My cage had an opening at the top for his perch. He enjoyed this. You have to spend alot of time with them if you want them to hang out with you. If you don't handle them, they will eventually get to where they do not want to be touched. This happens to many people. If you obtain one that has already gotten this way, it is possible with a lot of patience, to change this demeanor. They are fun to watch as they tend to do silly things at times. My friends found out that when they left their Mountain Dew unattended, Patches would find his way there and enjoy their drink. He also would walk backwards and fall off the back of his perch! He never got hurt but this is just one of the things he would do. I would recommend this pet to any age as long as you have taught your youngster to be gentle with pets. They are beautiful to watch and can be your best friend, if you spend a good amount of time with them! Mimicry is interesting with the cockatiel. They aren't like a parrot but they do chatter. Mine mimiced the telephone, coughing, things of this nature.. knocking on the door.... He was a very enjoyable pet and I still miss him!
