I've had two cockatiels, and very different experiences with each, but I would definitely recommend a cockatiel as a family pet, although not for families with very small children. My first bird, Comet, was a little noisy, but our second, Zeus, was the sweetest bird you could imagine. Cute little chirping and singing noises (at appropriate hours) and loved to keep us company, sit on our shoulder, sing to us, and be handled. We never successfully taught him words, but we didn't try very hard.

I would recommend getting a young bird and handling him as much as possible to end up with an adult bird who is comfortable and friendly around humans. They're much more fun if you have a bird you can play with and let out of the cage
