Overall, I would say I will never own a cockatiel again for the main reason of noise. In regards to birds, it was clearly the loudest pet I have ever had. It would chirp and mimic sounds all day and night sometimes!

Of course, if you are into a bird that is good at mimicking sound, a cockatiel may be a good for you. My bird used to look in his cage mirror and say "pretty bird" over and over again. Yes, I may have had a narcissistic bird but he was entertaining.

In regards to the family however, the bird was quite friendly, and he would fly to my mother's shoulder and sit there at times. He was a bit too aggressive for kids but great for adults (when he wasn't making so much noise of course). If you are going to buy one, just keep that in mind. If you can deal with some squaking, you might enjoy the pet greatly.
