Parakeet

My experience with parakeets has never been terrific. To me, parakeets are loud, messy pets, which offer little engagement or loyalty.
If you are looking for a lovely sounding bird, this isn't the one.
Bird cages need to be cleaned regularly, and are messy (bird seed) and stinky (bird poop).
I would say parakeets are an appropriate pet for children 8yrs+. If the child can be gentle and calm with the bird, the child will love holding it, petting it, and hearing its sounds. It is an easy pet to keep in a child's room, assuming the child can keep the bird's cage locked and out the reach of any other pet in the home.
Bird seed is relatively inexpensive. We never sought any veterinary care while we had our parakeet. However, cages can be very expensive.
Unfortunately, our parakeet's cage was knocked over by another pet and never made it out alive.
