I had 2 parakeets, Leafy and Sunbeam, when I was very young (around age 6 is when I got Leafy). I got them from a pet store and unfortunately they were not very friendly. I was too afraid of bites to get them used to handling (I was also too young to know how) so they both grew up as "look-only" birds, happy to put a hole in a finger if they were picked up.

However, my friend also had 2 parakeets, Snowy and Rio, and they had been hand-raised and therefore they were able to be handled. They were lovely pets, happy to cuddle and be held, although a little skittish. So it all depends on the amount of training and handling the birds receive.

They were relatively easy to care for, and were content in a smallish cage. They were beautiful birds, and sang often. I'd definitely recommend these birds as starter birds.
