We had a Budgerigar for 8 years I think and well, it was not my fave pet at all. Maybe it is because I was a child when we got it, I do not know.
As much as these parrots are really easy to take care of and and it does not cost you much to have budgerigars, they are not animals for kids.
First of all, our parrot used to wake us up at 5 am every morning (the cage was in our bedroom). Second, as children we wanted to play with our parrot and parrots of this breed are not very sociable and do not like interacting with children.
You have to remember to clean its cage every day, otherwise it becomes really smelly and looks ugly.
As I think about it now, I think we gave our parrot a cage that was not big enough. Please, find a cage that is big enough for your parrot to stretch wings easily, jump a bit and maybe fly a little if possible.
Generally, I would not recommend this animal to families with little kids - as I said, parrots are not really sociable (or at least mine wasn't) but if you like these pets - do not hesitate - adults in my family really enjoyed having our budgie.
