Budgies- A good bird for older kids or beginner

I have owned several budgies over the years, have bred and showed them. Your best bet is to get one from a breeder or rescue. You want to work with them right from the start. The birds from the petstore are kept in large groups and they are a bit flighty. I suggest having the wings clipped by the vet or experienced person. This does not cause the bird pain. Think of it as a haircut. They are pretty easy keepers. They can be messy (all birds are) and they can be loud. These are good pets for 8+ with help. keep in mind all animals bite and budgies are no different. they can give a good pinch which may scare a young kiddo. I prefer to keep them in pairs. They seem happiest this way, but if you really want to bond with your bird keep him seperate as they naturally bond to another bird over a human. Do provide a mirror for a single budgie. Male budgies are more likely to talk!!
