Budgies are great low-maintenance pets to own. Best kept in pairs if you are unable to spend lots of time with them. They are bright and curious and easily bored. It is best to have a good variety of toys for them and rotate them frequently. Adding new foods like fruits and veggies also keeps them active and supplements their diet. They are like little monkeys and are great fun to watch as they play. They can be trained to do tricks and mimic words but this requires consistency and dedication on the part of the owner.
Birds are delicate and easily scared so it is best to keep them out of reach of small children who may not understand how to behave around birds. They can be given free flight time but ensure the area is free from hazards. Keep them away from cooking fumes and cold drafts.
Treated well, budgies can live for 10 years or more so it is quite a commitment in that respect. Cages, toys and food are relatively cheap. Overall they are easy to care for, highly entertaining pets who give you back as much as you give to them.
