Parakeets are lovely birds that comes in all different shades. They are inexpensive compared to other birds and are pretty agreeable as well. They do not need much, just a big cage, a perch, some toys, food, and water. One thing you have to keep in mind though is that they can be messy, the bottom of their cage needs to be cleaned often. They don't have a refined singing voice compared to some other birds, but their chirps are still sweet and very cute. From what I know, they can be trianed to say a few words, but it's difficult. If you want a bird that can talk you'd probably be better trying with an African grey parrot.

They were my first pet and I think they will be perfect for any child that wants a pet that isn't a goldfish. It's also a good pet to start with if you've never owned a bird before.
