A little under a year ago my boyfriend decided to bring home two parakeets from the pet store. I am an animal lover so didn't really mind, but the parakeets definitely aren't my favorite pet. There are some things I like about them. First, they are very cute. We got two males and they are very friendly with each other and pretty friendly with us. Additionally, it is very easy to care for them overall. The cage is simple to clean and it is easy to switch out their food and water each day. However, their biggest downfall is that they are extremely loud. I know that birds tend to be vocal, but these birds like to make a lot of noise in their cage. They will chirp and squawk at each other or just randomly. They don't make noise when it's dark, but are chirping at basically all other times. I live in an apartment and my neighbor even mentioned that she could hear them through the walls. Overall, they are a good pet if you want something low maintenance, but I would not suggest them if you are in any way worried about noise.
