If you’re looking for a low-maintenance pet, then parakeets are a good fit for you! I had a great experience with my parakeets, each of which lived for about 3 years. They are colorful and chatty, and they can be great listeners if you just need a friend. If you put in the proper amount of time and patience, you can even train them to let you hold them. My parakeets loved music, and they would sing along to members of my family playing musical instruments, or even just to music on the radio. They were definitely happiest when their cage was in the room where my family spent the most time—they loved to be a part of the action! My only complaint is that they can be pretty chatty at night, but folding a blanket partially over just the front of their cage usually gave them the hint that it was bedtime.
