We have owned a few budgies over the years. The present ones, are Hewie and Lewie identical blue and white budgies. They are tame, and can be taken out of their cage. We don't allow them free range of the house, but keep them in a closed room for their "out of cage" sessions. This is for their own safety, as we also have two cats in residence, who would just love to have an extra snack, if they got the chance!
These two budgies have never been able to learn to talk, as they seem to be too absorbed in each other!
Overall, budgies are very low maintenance pets. For kids who are old enough to be responsible to care for them properly, remembering to feed them and cleaning the cage, they make a very suitable first pet.
