Parakeets are small, colorful and very intelligent. They are highly trainable and once trained love to be handled and can show remarkable affection for their owner. They are easiest to train when young and love to please. I love their chatter as they are quite vocal but not loud or screechy like some larger birds. I've never taught one to talk but they can be trained to mimic speech.

Parakeets love to interact with people, sitting on their shoulder or scampering around on the table or chair back where their owner may be sitting. They can be easily trained to do tricks and repeat actions they have learned.

They are easy to care for but do require a lot of cleanup. You can find lots of cage toys for their amusement at any pet store, and don't for get the bath. They love to bath! You should be prepared to do daily cleanup around their cage as they do tend to fling seed husks and molted feathers around both inside and outside their cage. The cage also needs to be cleaned on a weekly basis. They may not be ideal for people with allergies but otherwise they are lovely little pets.
