Do not buy your child a bird

Birds are beautiful, enchanting, and majestic. To a child it is so cool to have a pet and companion that can fly. But underneath the awe and novelty of having a flying pet is the reality of them being noisy, messy, and moody.

My parents got my brother and I a pair of Parakeets one summer, and although they were fun to have, my brother and I (being 8 and 11) did not have the patience or discipline to dedicate the time to train/condition the birds. They were noisy, and when we were not vigilant with clipping their wings, they could be very evasive. I would not advise purchasing a bird or birds without doing some research into the training and care it takes to own such a pet.
