Acquired: Pet store

Having a budgie was definitely an experience. We bought Goldie from our local pet store when she was still very young. A beautiful yellow color, she was a joy to watch as she bounced around her cage and played with the toys we bought her. She loved to sing and did so all day, every day. I enjoyed this, but my husband who worked nights, did not. Goldie was also not very friendly. I had read that budgies were social animals and loved to bond with their people. She had no interest in me or my three boys whatsoever. I am not sure if she had a bad experience at the pet store or if she just didn't like the noise my kids made while they played. Other than the constant singing, my only problem with Goldie was the extreme mess she made while eating. I tried everything from changing her food to placing a mesh cover we bought over the cage. Nothing worked. Twice a day I would have to sweep or vacuum under her and cage cleaning became at least a three time weekly job. The real problem came as we began to travel more and couldn't find reliable care for her while we were gone. We didn't feel comfortable leaving her alone because she loved dumping out her water by playing in it and it just wasn't safe. In the end, we gave her to a woman we knew who had many other birds. Away from my noisy boys she has become much more social. In the end, I enjoyed watching and listening to my budgie but the mess and the inability to leave her alone to travel made her a poor fit for my family.
