I have a lot of parakeets, the oldest is called Isis (Egyptian goddess) who is over ten years old. We are what you probably called hobby breeders, and so we currently have over 30 parakeets. Parakeets are awesome, depending on the size of your feed dishes they need to be fed every other day or so. If their dish is bigger then you can get away with feeding them a little less often. Water does need to clean out on a daily basis simply because they like to poop in it. Their cages does need to be cleaned at least once a week but can go longer if there is a need to. If you want a quiet bird then this is NOT the bird for you. They are extremely loud and vocal, their voices can be very pretty or they can be REALLY annoying. If you have birds in multiple rooms they will be loud enough to talk to each other in those separate rooms. I've known parakeets to talk to the wild birds outside. Some people say that parakeets have no personality but I think that they are wrong. I've had parakeets who I swear gave me stink eyes, and looks of what on earth are you doing. They can learn to talk, I've had birds who've cursed at me, one parakeet my mom had always said "shut up B'****" because of my sister. However if you stop cursing near them then they will forget how to say that word. Parakeets can come in so many colors and patterns, we have a lot of greens, yellows, blues, greys, and babies that are a colorful mixed of them all. we have one right now that looks kind of lavender. There can be albino parakeets, we had one that lived maybe two years, albinos don't live as long as others do. If you just want a pet for few years then don't get a parakeet. These guys if properly cared for will live for over 20 years so your in it for the long haul. I hope that this helps.
