There's just something so irresistible about the budgies in a pet store. Brightly colored, entertaining to watch, and the aisle is just so... clean. So when you find yourself leaving the store with 2 very pretty birds, a cage, and some food, you think you're getting your own little slice of pristine nature.
Pristine it is not. Yes, the budgies are pretty. Yes, they have a complex social life that is entertaining to watch and fun to engage with. Yes, they will scold you if you're too loud, and twitter at you in a companionable way. And you will enjoy them, oh yes, you will, as you constantly clean up the detritus of their meals -- both pre- and post-digestion.
Not only was the area around their cage constantly covered in a fine scattering of their food, their food's dust, as well as their poop and their poop's dust, but eventually I found bird seed, and bird poop, in random places around my entire apartment. Plastic shields for the cage, lovingly-hand sewn fabric cozies around the cage, all did nothing to cut down on the mess. Daily, sometimes twice a day, cleaning of the cage and wiping down of surfaces was the only thing that helped.
So yes, budgies are great. Fun, for sure. Colorful and a delight for children (to watch, not to hold) but unless you have time every single day for cage maintenance, and a large, clear space for their cage with enough room for the daily sweeping/vacuuming it'll take to clean up after these messy eaters and poopers, then just hang up bird feeders outside your windows.
