Budgies are fairly hardy and low maintenance as members of the parrot family go, and are also tiny and fairly docile. I have never been bitten by one of them, even if their bitty beaks could get around my finger to do so. They are pretty and brightly colored, especially when well cared for, and enjoy as large a space as you can give them, especially if their wings are unclipped. Budgies are playful and fairly bright, but don't really imitate sounds or voices. They can be taught some small tricks. Please note that they are susceptible to digestive upset, especially if algae grows in their water bottles, so check them regularly.
Budgies tend to be friendly but not very affectionate. The ones I had liked cheek rubs and having their necks very gently scratched, but weren't demonstrative. A bit like cats, they preferred to hang out and watch what I was doing, and sometimes play, instead of constant involvement and affection.
