Acquired: Pet store
Posted Jun 12, 2015
I bought my two parakeets (budgies) at a pet store along with a cage, some toys, and food. Their names were Star and Speckles, and they were very colorful and adorable. They liked to make little chirping sounds and were very social with each other, but they didn't like me or my family very much. I only wish that we had been more close.
Their habitats are fairly easy to maintain, but you should definitely get a net to go around the bottom half of the cage to keep flying food and feces from falling on your table. It was equally easy to feed them, but they got picky sometimes. Try to keep the type of food fairly consistent, as they don't respond well to diet changes. Parakeets really love to eat millet, but if you feed them this make sure to do it on a regular basis because they won't eat plain pellets and seeds after getting accustomed to the millet.
Overall, parakeets are great birds to have if you have the time, care, and patience to raise them well. Speckles, I hope you are doing well in your new home. Star, rest well in that land over the Rainbow Bridge.
