As a young girl my family owned two parakeets/budgerigars. As a kid it was amazing to see them fly around the house and hear them sing. Beyond that and how aesthetically pleasing their plumage was (we had one blue/white and one pale yellow/white), they were also really easy for me, as a 7 year old, to take care of. Cleaning the cage wasn't difficult, it mostly meant taking out the newspaper on the bottom every few days (which was kind if disgusting....) and some other things less often. Although most of these things can be perceived as the coolest things in the world for a small kid, adults may not see them as such. Of course, they might be somewhat too talkative, and getting the cage entirely clean is a little difficult, but I think that the positive view is more accurate, at least for my birds.
