Ah, the budgie. The common parakeet. This is a little bird that is widely familiar to almost everyone, an easily bred bird, common in pet shops.
This is a low maintenance bird, at least in comparison to the larger parrots. However, with proper training and handling, they can be a wonderful, friendly species, with unique personalities. I have met budgies that are simply amazing talkers and mimics, for example, They are fairly easy to step up train, and though I caution one to be careful, they are wonderful in free flight, especially in a sun room or aviary.
I do recommend caution, as these are small birds and are very delicate, but this is a good bird for a household with children, so long as there is supervision. They have a lovely song and do talk, but I haven't known them to be overly noisy.
A great starter bird, the budgie is easy to care for and, while social (I would have at least a pair) don't require the constant attention that the larger parrots do. This is a popular pet for good reason, and I would certainly recommend this bird for pet owners of any experience level, so long as you are willing to do your research.
