Parakeets. Who DOESN'T know parakeets? They are "the" pet bird, and can be found everywhere. My first bird (age 9) was a bright green budgie. As were my next three birds -- I grew up with parakeets burbling in the house, and I loved them all.

My favorite budgie was Gordon, a white 'keet I acquired while in college. A beautiful, pale, pale blue-gray bird, he had none of the characteristic 'keet markings (barred wings, cheek spots, etc), and with the exception of pale streaking on his primaries and tail feathers, he was a uniform ghostly blue-white in color.

When I took Gordon home, he hadn't quite been weaned off of mash, so I spent a month feeding him with a syringe. His was one of the tightest bonds I've ever had with any pet. Twenty years after his passing, I still miss him.
