Budgies, though held up as a great starter bird, are not for children. They need significant time outside of the cage every day and, unless you train them to a litter, that also means bird poop sheets over everything. Training must be a priority for your bird to be happy. They cannot simply sit by themselves all day. They will become depressed and despondent. Also, beware of bird seed marked complete diet. It is not. If that is the only food your bird gets they will develop dangerous fatty tumors. Cage cleaning is an every day endeavor and usually impossible for little hands. If you are thinking about getting your child a budgie do her and the bird a favor and wait till she's about 15.
