Budgies are adorable little birds. My sister really wanted a pet, and after a lot of discussion, she decided that budgies would be perfect for our family.
We decided to get four budgies since they are extremely social birds. Always conscious of our pets' housing, we opted for a very large parrot cage (traditional budgie cages are far too small).
The budgies did very well in our home. They were easy to feed, happy to explore the house, and we loved hearing their song. They also required more work than we expected. The budgies were extremely messy. I used to vacuum around their home at least twice a day to clean up seeds and feathers.
We were always extremely affectionate with the budgies, but they never became comfortable with us. I think that because they had each other, the were less interested in socializing with people.
Overall, birds require a certain type of person and home. You have to be prepared to clean (or live with) stray feathers. You have to be patient with handling, and accepting if they're not interested. You also have to provide ample toys, because they are very smart and inquisitive birds. Finally, budgies require exercise. A cage is never enough.
I often wonder about what we could've done differently with the budgies. I loved them all dearly, but it was difficult to have a pet that didn't want you to touch it.
